Fiber Art’s Evolution Beyond Macramé

Since it’s inception in the 70’s, fiber art has undergone a remarkable transformation, moving far beyond the familiar knots of macramé. While macramé undeniably holds a special place in the realm of textile arts, contemporary fiber artists are pushing boundaries and redefining the craft in innovative ways. Below are a few of my favorite contemporary artists that ingeniously employ this nostalgic material.

Lauren Williams Art

Lauren Williams incorporates a blend of brass and oak into many of her fiber art pieces, lending a sense of opulence to each piece.

Karen Gayle Tinney

Karen Gayle Tinney artfully weaves hand-formed ceramic sculptures into her magnificent pieces, providing a structural element to complement the otherwise gentle quality of the fibers.

MGInteriorDesign

One of my favorite places to fine unique artwork is Etsy. This creator, MGInteriorDesign, uses knots as their signature modern twist on the classic art form. I particularly like this high-contrast piece.

MX Atelier

MX Atelier crafts intricate patterns in their artwork, forming a labyrinth with a combination of twisted, rope-like sections interwoven with loosely hanging threads. The result are stunning pieces that captivate the eye.
